January Gardening Tips
New year, new start....with shorter days and cold weather, January presents the opportunity to make plans for your garden for the year ahead and make a start on the following tasks:
Flower/Plants
- Plant bare-root roses, trees and shrubs
- Prune standard roses
- Take hardwood cuttings from shrubs
- Remove dead stems and leaves from perennials
- Tidy grasses
Fruit/Vegetables
- Fork over empty beds and mix in compost
- Plant fruit trees
- Prune Gooseberry bushes
- Warm up beds for early crops
- Tie raspberry and blackberry canes to support wires
Greenhouse
- Monitor heaters to ensure they are working efficiently
- Take root cuttings of perennials
- Wash greenhouse glass to let in more light
- Water plants when the compost is dry
- Regularly deadhead over-wintering plants
General
- Recycle your Christmas tree
- Order seed potatoes, onion sets and garlic
- Order early from seed catalogues
- Dig compost into empty areas of soil
- Add shredded winter prunings to your compost heap
Spring is close.... With a little stretch in the days, we can spend more time in the garden enjoying the early spring colour and look forward to the new season by completing the following tasks:

May has arrived and it really is a lovely month in the garden! Days are getting warmer and longer, we're surrounded by trees in leaf and blossom and our pots, borders and baskets burst with wonderful colour! We can really feel that Summer is on the way and it’s time to tidy up spring plants, plant out summer flowers and get planning for Autumn...
As Summer arrives, we can relax outdoors enjoying the long, warm days surrounded by our gardens in full growth, colour and fragrance! There’s plenty to harvest in the vegetable garden and keeping on top of weeds is a key task!
The garden is in full bloom, full of mid summer colour, texture and fragrance! Now is the time to maintain the blooms, providing your garden with the care it needs to prevent drying out during the warmest months
With long, hot summer days, August is the time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the garden. Regular watering, feeding and tidying are keys to keeping your garden looking beautiful... .
September is the perfect time to take stock of your garden after the busy summer period. Now is the time to establish new plants and make plans for the coming seasons... .
In October, with colder nights and shorter days, we can enjoy the last splashes of autumn colour in our beds and borders. With the prospect of first frosts, there are plenty of jobs to be done in the garden....
